Pack | Essential Gear for Travelling in Southeast Asia
Each and every one of us has our very own unique style and preference so you won’t find a list anywhere telling you to pack your favourite sundress or “travel clothes”. We know what we wear, how often we need to change our clothes or do our laundry.
I like to remind people that people live in the places we travel to, so we do not need a “dedicated” special set of travel clothes. They dress as we would: office workers wear work clothes and everyone else wears everyday clothes.
My only two pieces of advice are:
Modesty - even if you are near the beach, dress to fit in: wear just as much or more than what most of the locals are wear.
Comfort and Functionality over Fashion - it is hot and humid hear, so light breathable clothes are ideal.
However if you are looking for a list of things most people forget, this is it:
Toiletries
Switch to solid shampoo/conditioner and body wash
Reef-safe, non-toxic sunscreen
Non-toxic, deet free insect repellent
Reusable menstral cup for the ladies
Clothes
Rain jacket / poncho (if you don’t have one, and you are travelling to Indonesia, $10 buys you a really good pant and jacket set that will last years)
UV protective long sleeve sun shirt or just a lightweight long sleeve shirt
Compression socks
Wide-brim hat
Sarong or light weight scarf
If you plan on hiking above 2000masl, I recommend base layers
Gear
Water filter
Additional thermal bottle or any bottle
Spare tote bags
Collapsible/packable day bag
Dry bag
