Mount Sibayak is a steaming, yellow-rimmed volcano just above the highland town of Berastagi — and one of the easiest sunrise treks in Sumatra. It’s a short but rewarding hike with panoramic views, alien terrain, and that distinct sulphur smell that reminds you the earth is very much alive. After your descent, wander through Berastagi’s bustling fruit and flower markets or warm up with spicy local noodles. A perfect stop on your way to or from Bukit Lawang or Lake Toba.

Ideal for early risers, volcano lovers, and anyone who wants a short, stunning hike without the crowds.

  • Fly Singapore 07:30am to 08:00am Medan

    Drive to Berastagi (±2.5hr)

    (option) venture to Sipiso-piso waterfall lookout (±2hr return extra)

    Explore Berastagi town on foot.

    • In Berastagi, guesthouses are really old and run down so we opt for a hotel with hot water and AC.

    • WiFi is available but we recommend you stay offline and let the 3-Day Effect really sink in

    • Hotel has an in-house kitchen. Wander into town to explore some regional flavours.

  • You will be walking through the jungle and rafting down river, pack the essentials, but remember:

    • Cold weather-wear (Berastagi is 1300masl and it gets really cold before sunrise)

    • Dress like an onion

    • Hat

    • A small (20L) backpack to carry your water and essentials in

  • Avoid the Northeast Monsoon season, November-February.
