Bukit Lawang sits at the edge of Gunung Leuser National Park — one of the last places on Earth where critically endangered orangutans still live in the wild. This is where we go jungle trekking with trusted local guides to observe these semi-wild great apes in their natural habitat, especially the four remaining adult females from the original rehabilitation program. The forest here hums with life, from hornbills to slow lorises, and the trek ends with a simple joy: tubing down the Bohorok River instead of walking back.
Ideal for travellers who care about wildlife, don’t mind sweating a little, and want to experience the rainforest with both curiosity and care.
Sustainability and conservation is not a straight line, please read more here. Right now, there are four semi-wild female orangutans still alive from the rehabilitation days (Wati, Ratna, Pesek, and Gantung); they were hand-raised in captivity, released into the wild and come back to see their human friends often.
